Last Saturday afternoon I visited L.A.'s historic Memorial Coliseum. It marked The Huskers' most recent close-game loss––to USC no less. But there was still plenty to celebrate beyond the gridiron.
Just to be clear: I'm a Northwestern grad, and St. John's College grad, with some time spent at NYU and the University of Chicago, but in the Battle of LA, I am a Bruin all the way.
I lived here on and off since 1996. My allegiances are very clear: I'm a Bruin man, but way below allegiance to The Corn. I covered USC fairly, warts and all, if you read whole piece and watch the videos. #GBR
Yes, Fight On. But don’t try so hard. Next time, to better impress those of your readers who are similarly familiar with said locations, accentuate the angst of the Huskers falling to the team representing the college that must not be named. Yes, the cheerleaders are gorgeous. Yes, they’ve produced numerous championships. But they’re still too big for their britches. That’s how spoiled rich kids reliably act. They do have some academic cred, but keep diminishing it with insufferable athletic department scandal. Having attended Chadron State, CSU Long Beach, CSU Dominguez Hills, and UC San Diego, I long ago pledged my non-Husker pigskin pride to UCLA and Cal. You should consider a similar move, lest the dazzling lights of LALAland have their way w/you. Like maybe falling prey to some unscrupulous real estate mogul alum from Newport Beach, a festering stronghold of pro-Trojan sentiment if ever there was one.
Sorry, I enjoy your stuff and that’s all more or less in jest for sure. One thing’s also certain: USC makes a gratifying target! But though I’ve almost always rooted against them they’re fun to keep track of. I came out here to LoCali in the early 70s from the Neb Panhandle. In those days USC and UCLA games were replayed on Ch. 5 late on Sat. nights. As an insomniac and football fanatic I was psyched. They’ve had an amazing progression of talent over the years, but the film school rejected a good friend after enticing him to enroll and apply and I’ve never gotten over it, particularly since they admitted a movie star’s son who was no great shakes. So they’re indelibly associated in my mind with nepotism and such, not a winning trait. But yeah, the cheerleaders.

Weird. I thought I had responded to this. Lived in and out of LA for several decades. I am a Bruins man. I think I covered USC warts and all.

Point taken. I think I kind of pointed with out with the Varsity Blues reference.
