Creighton basketball, Nebraska football, and why the Democrats are going to win again in 2024.
The Democrats are going to win in 2024. There is not one person running on the GOP side with the unifying charisma, policy nuance, and campaign smarts to beat the better financed Democratic Machine.
Every April, after the Creighton University Bluejays again come achingly close to advancing far in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, attention in the Cornhusker State returns to our first love, college football. As the vaunted "Spring Game" approaches, Cornhusker fans start pouring over depth charts, that new running back transfer, and that exciting if pot-enthralled wide receiver who was mysteriously let go by USC or Alabama. Naturally, there is the requisite buzz about the new or returning quarterback with all that untapped potential. It's always been the good-enough quarterback at Nebraska over the past twenty-odd seasons. Always a chronically injured disappointment in the end.
The Nebraska hope machine grows and rolls right into August and September when Husker hype meets cold hard reality: we are not very talented. Our walk-ons and in-state recruits play hard for their families, their state, and their teammates, but they are no match for the speed, agility, and general athleticism of the top teams in the Big 10, a hard-nosed heavily urban Rust Belt conference this ag state school should never have joined.
And so it is almost every spring with the Trump Train. This time goes the delusional fanfare, things will be different. Trump is going to win! It's 2016 all over again.
Then, after a successful primary season for Trump and/or his hard-core MAGA congressional surrogates, reality hits home again come November: Trump is not going to win and his hard-core hand-picked candidates are not going to win either. As with Husker football, amnesia sets in, and the same insane drama is replayed the following year.
Could Nebraska go 13-0 this season? Possibly. New coach, new system, new enthusiasm, some star recruits. Statistically, it's long overdue. Likely? No. We will find a way to let success slip away. It might be in the final regular season game against Iowa (an invented rivalry no Husker fan genuinely cares about) or in the Big Ten Championship game or against some lowly opponent we were expected to crush. But we will blow it somehow.
And the same will happen with Trump. The message discipline during his recent short jeremiad in Mar-a-Lago was impressive. But how long will that last? Trump will eventually lose his cool in a "bigly" way. And the sundry hypocritical forces impressively arrayed against him will pounce.
The mortal enemies of Trump and the Republican Party are masters of disinformation. The Democratic Party and their friends in media, social media, search, entertainment, the deep state, the justice system, the judiciary, and the donor class have effectively redefined "extremism" as "Republican." It's a tour de force of rhetorical manipulation not seen since Lenin or Goebbels. Common-sense Americans who read my posts know that most of the violent extremism over the last decade has come from the Democratic Left: the Ferguson and Baltimore riots, the Antifa/BLM Summer of Insurrection, the assassinations of cops, the ongoing threats of mayhem if a court decision does not go the Left's way, the terroristic attack on a GOP baseball practice, the attacks on police precincts, statues, federal buildings, and tens of thousands of small businesses. Left-wing terrorists and Left-run cities are the real threats to domestic tranquility.
Yet, because of their disciplined laser focus on Trump and January 6, Democrats have been able to casually, flippantly, arrogantly label anyone who says or who has ever said anything supportive of Trump or Trump's policies as "extremist." It's akin to the McCarthyite Red Scare in its scope and persuasive power. And now Biden and his rich donors are hiring an army of young robotic Tik-Tok "influencers" to drive that message home and block from view the President's own corruption and criminal failures on multiple fronts. The mass indoctrination media is all too happy to play along.
The Democrats are going to win in 2024. There is not one person running on the Republican side with the unifying charisma, policy nuance, and campaign smarts to beat the better-financed Democratic freight train. Point of reference: the Trump-deranged Democrats elected a severely mentally ill barely cognizant and communicative Pennsylvania stroke victim, John Fetterman, to the U.S. Senate. Do you honestly think they care if Joe Biden is a bit creepy and geriatric? Should Biden keel over, they will elect the empty-headed Kamala or Pretty Boy Newsom over anyone the Republicans put up. Democrats don't care about crime, the border, the deficit, the debt, or inflation. They care about the rights of criminals, the right to an abortion, and, the right to preteen genital mutilation in pursuit of one's true gender identity. They will fight any attempt to make the vote cleaner, fairer, and more secure. They will lie, they will cheat, they will manipulate. Republicans are playing nice. Democrats are playing for keeps.
Until the Republican Party hires raw talent to fight Democrats tooth and nail in the trenches, soften their stances on gay rights, abortion, and guns, and find a worthy self-financed alternative to The Orange Man, they will lose.
